How to Protect Your Computer: Firewalls

First, if you don't know what a firewall is, go to How Firewalls Work for an explanation, but a firewall essentially examines what is entering and leaving your computer to make sure that unauthorized users or applications aren't in your system.

If you're running Windows XP, you might already be running Windows Firewall, but if you want something a little more powerful, you might consider a commercial or a free firewall. ZoneAlarm offers a free version of its firewall that is widely used. Kerio/Sunbelt offers a free firewall as well. Norton or McAfee offer commercial firewalls. My personal favorite is ZoneAlarm for its simple interface and design, but the decision is up to you.

After installing your firewall, go to Shields Up to test if everything is working properly.
